Is a GTX285 still worth getting at this point?

Do you think prices will drop for competitive purposes or will rise because of low stockage? Weve seen these cards go and stocking levels from where I am are not as easy to get as two months ago.... thats your opinion? Wait and pay north of $500 for a possible GTX360 fermi or get a GTX285 and possibly SLI it when I make my next build?

More about : gtx285 worth point

No. Don't buy one. Just wait and be patient. Don't buy a card just for the sake of buying a card.

Both Anandtech and THG list the 260 and 295 as the only viable Nvidia choices remaining. ATI has pretty much made all other cards irrelevant at least until nVidia cuts prices. Unless you big on PhysX, it's hard to argue nVidia's case outside of those choices.

The GTX285 has to drop to around $200-$250 for it to be "competitive"

Otherwise the 5850 clobbers it, while the 4890 or GTX275 offers almost similar performance while being much cheaper.

Neither of Nvidia cards are worthless to purchase atm. Just buy at an be happy.
5850 is much better then gtx285 due to several facts not only just fbs. Just grab
one and join the red team ;)

If NVidia stops making these cards and they're currently in short supply, the price will probably go up. If NVidia continues to make them in quantity, the price will probably drop.

The new ATI cards offer more bang for the buck, but they're hard to get. Whether or not to get something now or wait depends entirely on you. For me personally, it wouldn't be worth it for me to save $50 in exchange for not gaming for a month. My time is worth too much.

If you choose to wait, the current NVidia offerings being in short supply in of itself leads me to believe that fermi won't be as bad as many expect. If fermi were a disaster, I would think NVidia would drop the prices of their existing cards in order to take advantage of the limited supply of the 5800 series cards. If fermi cards are good, I would expect prices on the DX 11 cards to drop across the board as time goes on. The same thing that typically happens with 2 competitive companies.

I chose to go with GTX275 instead of the GTX285 because as stated by Bluescreendeath performance is quite similar. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-roun...

I personally will wait til the nvidia 300 series settles itself in the market and they make sure there are no bugs with the cards or the drivers before upgrading to it.

the ATI 58x0 and 57x0 are still quite hard to get.

@ dood ^ The problem with the GTX 275 and 285 right now is pricing spikes (in the USA anyway). Both have shot up around $40-50, while the HD 4890 is still available as low as $180 before rebates.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=E...

@ Jack. With HD 4850 and HD 4870 supply drying up(and prices increasing), the $110 GTS 250 is good option.

In the UK the 260 216 has increased from £125 to nearly £140 in a month.

And in regards to the Ops question, 1x285 is not worth it, 2x260 is far faster if you can support it via m/b / PSU.

even if you are big on PhysX you could look into the hybrid GTX275 with the 250 built onboard it's comparable to the 285 and when you are looking into the 200-300$ price range you should wait for Nvidia to release fermi and ATI to push their cards down again to kill Nvidia sales on comparable performers.

you can pick up a 4850x2 for the price of the 275 and most 260's and it will blow them out of the water
I'd be looking into something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... with the aftermarket cooler so you can overclock it and get performance closer to the 295 in most games

@pauldH: I wasn't aware from the price increase. I live in Peru. the GTX285 is priced about 40% higher than the GTX275, hence my suggestion.

Botton line, the GTX 285 is NOT WORTH YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY =)....

I would rather spend 350.00$ US on dual 5770's and have the satisfaction that I can obliterate the 285 any day.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5770-review-tes...

with better drivers it makes the 285's case even worse..... Please don't throw your money away =)

Why not look on ebay for a 4890? I got a great deal on mine.

I picked up 2 GTX285's back in Jan/Feb of this year for $300 each. This was before the GTX275's were out, but I've got to say that I've never regretted runnig 2 of these in SLI! More power than I need (even for Crysis) at 1920x1200 resolution. I have issues with ATI's crappy drivers (I used to run an ATI 4870), so until something better comes along, I'd recommend either a GTX275 or at least a GTX260 core 216. Depends on your needs, but if it's power, then that is what I would look at.

Ransom

For those wanting specifics on my driver issues, I'm talking about pink walls in L4D and weird water outlines in CoD: WaW. Stuff like that that ATI/AMD never fixed with new driver releases. I used to like ATI, but I'll spend a little more now for nVidia. (note: the 4870 was $300 when I bought it... The GTX185's were the same price when I picked them up). I'm glad I switched, as I can live without DX11 until later half of 2010. IMO the 4870 sucks at running DX10. My nVidia cards handle it superbly, even if running just 1.

I am so close to buying a 5850 and defecting.... Ive had 4 Nvidia cards since the 6800xt............ I need to replace my 9800GTX+ soon.................. and now im just confised as I dont think I want to wait for Fermi of the GTX360(if ever). I think it will be at least $400 upon release. We have virtually no word on Nvidias side on their new cards so ppl are defecting like rats off a ship just to get their hands on a 5770,5850, 5870, or a 5970.

I do think physx is better as Crysis utilized it pretty well and I dont really want to change my current drivers but I have an option of a PALIT GTX285 or a sapphire 5850, and an MSI 5850..... which is it??

Well, if you want Physx, then Nvidia is the only way to go. As much as I love ATI new offerings, I still think DX9/10.1 will live a good year and a half--if not more, before DX11 catches up, so if you have plans of upgrading after a year or so from now, then just go ahead and get the best Geforce you can buy today. There's no point in waiting when it comes high-tech devices... There will always be some latest and greatest stuff around the corner.

Yes I realize that there are always better gpu's and tech aroung the corner(gtx300 fermi's) but I want to get a card that will still be good or midrande even when that corner arrives..... so the gtx285 should be decent as is my current gpu(9800gtx+) is still a decent choice for gamers and gpu-heads today.

I do not think the GTX285 currently is worth it. The only viable Nvidia cards these days, are the GTX260 and GTX295, all the others are easily replaceable by ATI competitors for much less money.

still waiting for prices to drop. I reserved the 5850 but I have not picked it up yet. I wonder if they sold it by now.... Im still contemplating on whether I should just get it or wait just a little bit to see if prices for the GTX285 will drop below $200, or if there is any news on Fermi...... or for prices of the 5870 to drop..... damn...... I was also thinking of getting a nikon d3000 slr as well.............. what to do?!?!?!

I'd just go ahead and get the 5850. It's better thn the 285, and has dx11 and other features. And the GTX 285 won't drop in price, it'll probably go up since Nvidia has stopped production of their high end gt200 cards in November.

its already been more than a month since i got a 5850 so basically for others a gtx285 might do justice for most games and almost all apps but it didnt cut it for me. The drivers are mature tho.... thats about it...

I think the only thing the nVidia is selling these days other than bull **** is their low end cards like the GT220, GT240 and all those crap and maybe a few GTX260's! ATI has pretty much taken over. The only way to survive for them now is price cuts or the GT300! Does nVidia even know that they are not #1 or their arrogance has turned them blind?? :)

If by GT300 you mean the GT310 I don't think that's going to do much for their bank balance, the GTX470 and GTX480 on the other hand just might.

Sorry to be the one to burst your bubble, but in the grand scheme of things Nvidia may not be as reliant on the success of those financially, as much as some would have you believe.

Then on what would they depend, their 3D sunglasses? :D
I admit they may not be banking on them, coz already the rumors were in the air, their latest release date got postponed coz their cards weren't up to the ATI's HD5xxx series, but what else do they have?

Come on now.. Is it really news to anyone that no company makes their cash on the high end?

Nvidia could sell 10% as many gtx285 level cards as they do and still lead in discrete market share because of the gt310 level OEM cards...

Hell, Nvidia had nothing in the high end since the 5000 came out and ended up about even in market share. This is only because 90% o the GPU market buys the low end non gaming cards.
