I was playing counter strike source and had some other programs running.

Randomly, the monitor signal simply stopped showing, and I heard a repeated sound from counter strike.

I think this might have something to do with the display/audio driver that the video card uses, but it's just a hunch.

Video card is a diamond ati hd 2600XT.
amd athlon le-1640
2x1gb pc 6400 @ 800mhz

xp pro legit all updates sp3

I know the system was still working because the hard drive would still sound sometimes and the internet activity was on the modem and the computer port
