Why is RAM so expensive now?

Last June (yeah, almost a year ago) I bought 6GB of OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600 RAM, for $100. For proof, here's my receipt:

Nearly a year later, as technology has progressed and things should be cheaper, the exact same set of RAM costs $199.

What's up with that?

  1. Yeah Ive been wondering the same thing. My boys theory is that all these SSD makers are sucking up the chips and manufacturing times that would be spent making RAM for the computer. I paid 99 bucks for some Crucial Tracer DDR3 1600 ram just in March and if you look at the egg now, Its 134. I dont know but It makes you think If ssds are creating a shortage and driving the price up?
  2. i paid $70 for 8GB(4x2GB) DDR2-800 on 4/3/2009
  3. Just last April I bought two 2gb crucial kits for 45 bucks today one of those kits cost 55.
  4. So what's the consensus?

DDR2 is cheap and DDR3 is through the roof?

My DDR3 has doubled in price over the past year.
  5. I paid $50 for 2x2GB XMS2 back in late 2008. Now they go for $135.
