When I switch on the toshiba sa40/214 all I get is the word password at the top left of the page

You may have picked up an infection (virus / malware).
Boot from Windows CD and repair the OS.
Run virus & malware scans after updating their signature databases.
Don't let a single AV scan that comes out clean, let you think you are infection free !
