Upgrading from XP Home to XP Professional

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.configuration_manage (More info?)

I'm planning an OS upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro. I have
a wireless network (desktop and laptop) with SP2
installed on each machine. I also have a TON of
applications installed on each machine. A few questions:
1)How can i perform the upgrade with the least amount of
resistance (re-installing programs)and without losing
data?
2) I've read where i must remove SP2 from each machine,
load XP Pro, and then reinstall SP2 (with all of the
other updates for Pro)- what is the correct protocol?
3) I only have about 4GB free on the C Drive of the
laptop - will i have to partition the D Drive in order to
compensate for adding XP Professional?
Thanks. jm

You have a couple of options.
It is always a good idea to do a complete backup before doing any major
    upgrade or install.
Disconnect all hardware, including internal zip drives before beginning the
upgrade to cut down the chances of problems.

Here is one option if you have a cd burner.
You can use the slipstream utility called nLite to make you a copy of XP Pro
    w/SP2.

You will then be able to use the same cd in each puter as long as you have 2
    different licenses (key codes).

    Another option
Follow the upgrade path and then do your Windows Updates after you have
    completed the upgrade.
Start the computer put the CD in the ROM drive then choose install then
    choose Upgrade, not Full Install.
No need to uninstall SP2 before beginning.
