Hi,

So I was waiting 2 months to get the 5870 and it was never in stock and when it was, it was costing me around 550$ canadian. I was so :fou: . Then I saw the Sapphire HD 5970 OC for 700$ which is 2x5870=1100$ Canadian and it was luckily in stock so I went ahead and bought it. Came 750$ canadian after shipping and taxes. My biggest budget on a video card but I had the feeling that its well worth it and that my case is an EATX workstation case that takes 35cm cards/13.5inch. I currently have a Corsair TX850 watt with 70amp@12V. Im running a Q9550@3550Mhz with 1.2V with 4GBDDR2ECC@1000Mhz. 3x500gb 7200RPM hard drives in RAID0... Ask me if you need more info. Im wondering if I over volt the HD5970 with the msi afterburner tool to like 1.26V to get 1Ghz core/ 1300Mhz, or 1350Mhz if im lucky, GDDR5, will 70Amp@12V be enough to run it stable? Im still glad that I took the 850W over the 750W but will it handle that much voltage and overclock? The card will be here by Friday xD Really, I couldnt sleep after I bought it online at night

Thanks

You should be ok if the volts on the 12v source is at least 11.5~11.8 when it is installed but it will limit your oc by a small margin. Good luck people will envy you.

Its the throttle protection system down clocking the cores when the VRMs reach boiling point 100C LoL hotter than the 86 I was getting with the GTX280. I dont think it happens in games thow because thers no game that can tax both gpus as Furemark does. Reviews show 88C max load temp when overclocked. Thers a guy that got it to 1025Mhz core on aircooling with the fan@100% and max temps was 76. Sure Furemark stress more the gpus and make temps grow to near 100C. I wish Arctic cooling makes something with 3 Fans cooling and vapor chamber to cool those 400W when overclocked LoL I have to bring back the 2 120mm fans I guess and put headphones so I dont hear the noise lol Hers a pic of the guys rig, credits go to him thats not mine, near 28K Gpu score in Vantage with one card on air stock cooler, Imagine 2 of them :o  on Aircooling:

I think I just found my answer, here: http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/17986/3

They got the HD 5970 stable @ the 5870 speeds with a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Watt psu so the Corsair TX850 should be up to the job. I guess when it gets here by friday, I will try getting higher than 5870 speeds and see if its stable.

I recently read something about the 5970 and how it will support two 8 pin connections instead of the standard 8 pin and 6 pin. The reason was it might be needed for overclocking. There may be a limit to how many amps a 6 pin connector can handle and that will limit the amount of OC.

It should yield a higher overclock but the HD 5970 @ ~1Ghz is already overheating so it will be more interesting for people with watercooling and dice cooling. I just received my tracking number for the Sapphire HD 5970! So I will tell ya what happens when I receive it.

Ok finally got the card, didnt have enough time to play with it but until now I got 950/1150 FurMark 1hr tested stable. Memory is on stock voltage but the GPU is at 1.165V, fan@60%. Temps are great 29idle/74 load with furmark but high on VRMs that max out at ~107 in furmark, the card starts throttling when vrm temps hits 120. Temps are lower in games thow. I will start oc the memory after as nowdays GPU speed is much more important. If you get the card not supported in ATI overvolt do this:

Unisnstall every ATI software.
Reboot.
Install latest driver.
Reboot.
Dont forget to overclock BOTH gpus when using overdrive as thers an option to switch gpus because you have to overclock each gpu by it self. MSI Afterburner only oc one core.

I had to flash to a newer bios to get fan control working.
One note about the latest dirt2 drivers out on 24nov: Overdrive is missing from the package so use the 8.663 Beta5 until catalyst 9.12 to enable overdrive. I will keep results updated when I have time,my goal is 1000/1300 but it seems the vrms temps are holding that back. I hope that helped those with the HD 5970 and if you have any oc results can we start a new topic about the 5970 oc results or post them here?

Thats what I learnd in about 2 hours lol

EDIT: Now 950/1150 stable , gpu with 5870 stock voltages and vram at stock which is under the 5870 vram voltage. I didnt not push higher because it will produce more heat and at this level everything is fast even crysis 4xAA 1080p. After 2 hours of crysis, GPU max temp was 66 and max VRMs temp was 71 with the fan set @ 40%. Not worth adding more voltage to get the extra 50Mhz and get the magic 1Ghz and higher temps. Now it is running 5870 default voltages. Note: If you OC past the 1000Mhz limit with afterburner and AMD GPU toolm, Power Saving features will be disables and your card will run full speed all the time so it is really not worth it going over 1Ghz unless for benchmarks. The sweet spot would be 950/1300 1350 maybe with both voltages at stock 5870. Now we need an x64 working Sapphire RedLine overvoltage tool to get the memory past the 1150 and run it at the 5870 voltages. Hers Sapphire Tech response to my email:

Redline is having issues with 64bit OS, our Engineers are working on this issue, as soon as they have information on it, they will release it on the website.

Hi, I am not able to use the RedLine tool provided with the videocard.Gives me a : It is not supported by your graphics card. Even though I have the Sapphire HD 5970OC and the temps are 29 idle, 54 load @40% fan. Any updates to make RedLine program work? Thanks

Wow I didnt know that sapphire tech were that fast to reply as I heard bad things about them LOL

I wonder if the HD 5870 can clock 950Core @ stock voltages?
