Hello, yes stupid question, but my gf needs a good autocad video card, and now that I sold 2 of my 285s (with 1 remaining), I'm going to buy a 5870 1 gig (don't need anymore power for now, since I'm running 1280x1024)

Anywho, will there be a difference between the 5870 and the 285 for autocad?

Thanks!

Just wanted to add (autocad is a bonus, I'm just curious) I'm only buying it for dirt 2 and because if the 300s (or w.e Nvidia will call em) are better in January, I'll just give this to my gf after.

Some people have reported success with softmodding a gaming card into a workstation card, but if what you want is a truly serious CAD machine, I'd get the workstation card from the start. It has better driver support, and is tuned differently to give the absolute best image quality and performance in workstation apps.

hmmm is that card a running model off another 1? example is there a way of getting the non workstation card and flashing it?

Also, I only asked about the 5870 because that way I could not buy a workstation 1 lol. I mean I know for cad and photoshop a workstation card would prob kill:p

Ultimately your original question about which is better, 5870 or 285 is somewhat irrelevant. They probably both suck for autocad. Maybe one sucks a little less, but it's probably splitting hairs. They are not designed for that type of work. So, it probably doesn't matter what you decide if it's between those two for that application. Pick whichever suits your other applications best as picking either one for autocad is moot.

Well its for my gf, so all she's going to be using it for is, some autocad (and 3D studio Max) and sims 3.

P.S

guys want some lovin from your woman? (And not just lovin, I mean LOVIN;)) Get them sims 3 collectors, that USB alone did 90% of the trick! :p

Anyways back to topic, I ended up picking this up for 350$ CAD

Came with Dirt 2 code, which is weird because my cousin's 5850 didn't:S

Haven't plugged it in because my gf is on the desktop :p I'll get her back by wrecking her sims:D :p

Yeah I imagined as much, I mean I use it personally for video editing as well, nothing to grand, but I just can't wait till Jan to see dirt 2 running in dx 11 :p.

I'm a huge codemasters and colin mcrae fan!

I'll make sure to do that, she said she noticed tearing and major slow down on the 285 GTX when rendering 3D.

Now that the 285 GTX is prob a paper weight for me, I should try flashing it to a workstation card see if it works!:p
