For some reason best known to history I did not install the I/O backplate (I think I mean back plate - the thin sheet of aluminum surrounding the ports), I think I was thinking it would help with cooling...

Do I need it...?
Any thoughts on me finding one somewhere, as amazingly I ended up throwing a lot of stuff out, plate included...

It helps ground the board when you are connecting/disconnecting cables. If you minimize that kind of thing while the computer is powered-on, you should be OK.
