When will 64 Mb of cache pay off?

Hello all,

Am I on the right track given the task is video capturing & editing?

1. A large cache of 64 Mb will pay off the most with larger HDs such as 2Tb and up.

2. 32 Mb cache with 1Tb and under is more than enough.

3. Enterprise HD are usually not as good for 'real-time' applications such as AV editing, (i.e., Seagate Constellation vs Barracuda(.

5. It's best to use as many HDs as possible in a RAID system.

6. RAID5 vs RAID0 vs RAID 1+0 performance is very similar (except for data safety).

Thanks,
William

1. Not necessarily, but most people buy a drive with the larger cache as it sounds better.

2. It also is enough for a larger drive.

3. There are AV drives, but any RAID ready drive will also work. Usually AV drives are not used in RAID mode.

5. True for performance, false for reliability. More drives in the same array also increase the risks.

6. Wrong. With the same number of drives, RAID 0 read transfer rate is higher than RAID 1+0 or RAID 0+1 and RAID 5 read transfer rate is slower than RAID 0. Write transfer rates on RAID 5 can be very low.
