Cannot format USB Disk Drive because of I/O Device Error

Hello,
I cannot format a USB Flash Disk because of an I/O Device Error. Is there a way I can get around it?

Buy a new USB flash disk.

What stick do you have and does it have any type of protection on it...write protect switch, built in utilities, etc?
If not, how old is it?
You could try a different usb port or even try it on a friends computer.
