Thanks all for your responses to my previous posts; it's been almost impossible to get info on this monitor in the UK.

One last question; I'm sure the general picture quality on the CML174 is miles better than CRT's, but how does it compare with other TFT screens like the Sony X72 and Iiyama AX4319? (Iiyama doesn't seem as popular in the US as the UK, where it's pretty much the no.1 manu?)

I can only speak of the Hitachi vs Samsung and Viewsonic. Particularly the 191t and the Viewsonic VX800. It blows both of them away. The Samsung colorwise, seems colder and not as vibrant. Overall playback quality on DVD on the Samsung was pretty nice...smooth...and in games...some ghosting. Overall 2D quality of the Samsung vs Hitachi...Hitachi wins hands down. Viewsonic had warmer colors than the Samsung...but Hitachi takes the Viewsonic as well. The Hitachi as far as DVD was concerned...you could see blurring in a movie...as well as in games. Even though the Viewsonic is rated at 25ms...it was much slower than the Samsung...and both Samsung and Viewsonic are way behind the Hitachi. As for Sony...I can only share what I have read, that kept me from purchasing one. In particular...the 18" model has to be hooked up via Digital or it is very difficult to set up satisfactorily. Once hooked up digitally...2D was nice...but again...slow on multimedia and games.

Overall picture quality of the Hitachi...9.5 out of 10. On very dark screens...you will see a little back light around the edges. I knew this from my Laptop, which has a Hitachi screen...where edges tend to show a little brightness. If you don't do a lot of work in old DOS...you may never see it. I use one DOS based program that I can see slight, very small shadows around the edges. Other than that...the quality of Hitachi screens is good enough that the company offers 0 dead pixels and 5 sub pixel warrantee. The quality of the screen is top notch. Rivals with the best of them.

But is this really a fair comparison since the Hitachi is a 17", while the Samsung is a 19" for ~$100 more?

Fair...Yes! I had the Samsung for just over a week before pixels started to go and the screen looked like a Star Field. More expensive...so what! Guess I'm lucky it did...now I own the Hitachi and am completely satisfied with it. Beautiful screen to look at. Pixel pitch of .264 vs the Samsungs .294...tighter pixels...nicer looking images. I use Photoshop with the monitor and everything looks great. 2D, 3D...Hitachi takes the crown, for the time being. I am sure that Hitachi lit a fire under other companies. I have owned Hitachi monitors for years now. Loved their CRT's until Samsung started making there tubes. The LCD is still all Hitachi...and the quality...you need to see for yourself...Less money...more satisfaction, and as good, if not better images. Fair...No...Nothing beats the Hitachi yet, for me.
