I have a Compaq Presario 1600 XL 145. This laptop had a new hard drive and
WinXP installed on it before I bought it and I installed a new stick of ram.
From the first day, I have been having issues with it shutting down, usually
when trying to go online or when trying to do a search of the hard drive (I
knew there were problems with it when I bought it). Within a week of having
it, I installed an antivirus, AdAware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and a
firewall. I removed a few viruses and alot of scumware. This problem with
shutting down happens practically all of the time. One other thing I noticed
is that the fan doesn't come on.
What I am wondering is, could this be a virus that wasn't detected, could it
be a heating problem, or could it have something to with the new harddrive
and winxp being installed?

I'm thinking your issue is registry problem. Find a registry cleaner and see
what happens.

hi,
well, i have the same problem with my laptop Presario 3055 bought it
recently.
i have a nortons antivirus offered as a package with my laptop.
i think there is something in bios leds the virus to attack the
laptop, so as to buy anti-virus from internet.
the other thing is : my laptop doesn't accept Oracle software copied
from another CD.
i think there is something hidden in bios to stop any copied
software.
i hope you will find a solution.
a+

Could possibly be, although it is a fairly recent install and there isn't
much on it besides what I installed (I did run system file check on it).
Don't anyone else in this news group have any opinion? Can anyone suggest
another news group? Maybe a reinstall is in order.
