ASUS P5W won't see SATA drives under slackware linux

Everything works now EXCEPT that SATA hard drives aren't recognized. IDE works fine, but it would be really nice to use SATA drives instead. Installed new drivers, switched connectors and drives, recompiled kernel multiple times, etc. Knoppix can't see the drives either. NOT using as RAID.

Is the MB (from Fry's) likely to be defective or are we missing something important?

I presume that you had that motherboard for several years. Are the SATA drives recognized in Windows? Which controller are the SATA drives connected to?
