It's a deathwish for ***casual-Linux-lusr*** to attempt a DIRECT install of NV_drivers into Ubuntu. It's like that 1st krak-hit ... don't do it or prepare to live in the TEXT-SCREEN gutter ! Wait for the driver to appear in pkg-manager.

I was able to do it before, though I did have a second computer to browse the forums to find out the next step. It wasn't clear cut then because one of the steps involves killing the XWindow and updating some conf files. Though it did take me around 2 hours and it was quite a lot of work to update the ati drivers.

I would suggest for the op to go to the ubuntu forums instead because I forgot the steps I did.
