APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: This week. I'm trying to take advantage of Black Friday sales and Newegg Bing CB at 10%

BUDGET RANGE: $1000 after rebates/Bing CB

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: VMware ESXi server for Cisco voice CCIE lab

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg. I have a friend in Michigan who can go to a Microcenter if needed

PARTS PREFERENCES: I7 processor, 12 GB ram

OVERCLOCKING: None

MONITOR RESOLUTION: NA

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: No OS needed

I'm looking to build a ESXi VMware server for a Cisco CCIE voice lab to run my unified communications lab. Basically, I'd like a fast processor, 12 Gig of RAM, and 1.5 - 2 TB of storage. I'll need a NIC so VMware doesn't throw a fit. Here is the build I'm thinking of. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Video Card:
I'll only use the video card once to install the VMWare software itself. After that, I'll never need to hook a monitor up to it again unless there are problems. What is a really cheap video card I could get?

You need a video card.
No on the CPU cooler unless overclocking.

You have a good config there...
Some suggestions...
1. RAM - I would rather get this Corsair - Though that OCZ is not bad but still Corsair would be better...

2. PSU - Even this PSU is as good as that Corsair...and is slightly cheaper...
Antec EA Green 380W

CASE alternatives - But your choice though...

Did you build this config and get esx running. I'm having trouble with a simular config. I had to add a pci NIC, to eliminate the no LAN error. Now I have a No Storage Error, during the initial installation.
Those who have installed ESX on something like this would love any help.

I built it and got it running perfectly. I did add the NIC as stated. This build worked perfectly.

chadlincoln:
I have similarly configured HP desktop e9280t loaded with 9GB DRAM and windows 7 OS. I am having issues installing ESXi 4.0. May be I am missing some important steps. Are you running ESXi 4.0 from Hard disk or USB? I have tried USB but machine does not boot up with ESXi. What host OS are you running? I would appreciate if you share 'how to do' procedures. My objective is to build CCIE Voice lab as well. Thanks/ Rakib
