What sort of performance hit might be taken from placing 1 4gb mem module in a 1366 mobo?
Unconventional, yes. I'm still curious. Obviously, the intent of doing such a thing is to allow for maximal memory upgrade in the future.

Your 1 stick will perform as a single channel. Performance hit for real world application is not much:

And yes, putting a 4GB stick in one slot will open you to more RAM capacity upgrade if you intend to have up to 24GB RAM.
