My Showstopper's remote has recently developed an annoying tendency.
Although all other buttons are responsive enough, I have found the the
"Select" button's responsiveness has deteriorated. When pressing
Select, I find that I need to aim the remote much more precisiely and
press the button quite hard.

Is this simply a case of batteries wearing out, or is it an indication
of another problem? If/when changing batteries on the remote, will I
lose any settings that I would have to re-program?

It's not the battery.
The remote needs to be opened and the Select key cleaned.

Here is how to open the remote.

The Showstopper code is not in the remotes ROM. It was
loaded into the eeprom at the factory. It's possible to lose
this code under certain conditions. The safest approach
is to build or buy a JP1 cable and save the contents of
the eeprom before attempting to open the remote. See

If you decide to proceed without doing this, remove the
batteries and let the remote sit for several hours before
doing anything else. The suspected cause of loss of
the contents of the eeprom is removing the batteries and
then pressing any key. There is still enough charge left in
a capacitor to permit the CPU in the remote to try to
process the keypress but not enough to let in complete
in most cases. The file needed to reload the remote is
available in the JP1 group on Yahoo. A JP1 cable is
required to do the reload.

Another approach is to reprogram another key to be a
select key. I copied the Select key to the Enter key
since I almost never had a need for the Enter key.
