I have a homebuilt AMD Athlon 64 4000 CPU, Geforce 9600GT with (4) 512 sticks of memory. It ran Hellgate London just fine but stumbles big time trying to run Sacred 2. My question is would putting a high end vid card such as an GTX 295 greatly improve my rig?

No. The CPU and lack of RAM is probably holding you back.

And besides, a GTX295 is way too expensive. You might consider selling your old MBO, CPU and RAM and buy a new AM3 platform with HD4870 or GTX260.

There is no doubt that it would improve your performance, but probably not to the degree that you are hoping. Your best bet would be to spend a bit more cash and buy or build a new rig with a decent middle end GPU and a good CPU. You'll see the best gains through the route.

There is no need to spend "a bit more cash". The GTX295 alone cost's more than a new AM3 PC with HD4870. :D
