I am looking to build a new system and I might scavenge my 9800gt 512mb ddr3 off of my current system and buy another one and put them in sli. Would this be better than getting a gt260 or 5770. I am choosing the other cards due to cost. Purchasing a 9800gt 512mb or 1g would be about 100 cheaper than both these other cards, so it would keep me in a better range economically. Thanks for the advice.

It would perform better then both of them, even if both the cards are 512mb. Someone asked a similar question 2 weeks ago. 2 9800gt 512mb perform the same as 9800gx2 which is probably a bit better then both those cards, but obviously more power is gonna be used. Also if you are not buying a new monitor and was satisfied with the performance of the 9800gt why not just keep it and save money???

Adding another 9800GT is your best bet. Two 512MB 9800GT/8800GT are roughly equal to a 9800GX2 which is roughly equal to a GTX 280. If you're just playing World of Warcraft mostly it'll be fine as it isn't too demanding especially if it's as a reasonable resolution as it tends to be. Make sure your CPU is powerful enough to feed information to the SLi configuration, your power supply is able to support the extra load, and your case has good enough airflow to support the added heat.

If you're building an entirely new computer adding another one is cost effective, but be aware that GTX 280-esque performance is already starting to show it's age (especially since that specific card has been EOL'd already) and you're better off either going with an HD 5850/5870 or waiting for Nvidia's new line of DirectX 11 cards.

If you can get a 5850, then get one, but I think for temporary you could get another 9800gt. But think of it this way. You can drop $80 on the card, and then save money for a new card, or just re-use the 9800gt for now and save the $80 and put it towards a new card. Also have you tried selling your 9800gt? If you get $50 for it could help get you a 5850.

Post the rest of your new system as well!

I am also thinking of an gpu upgrade I curently have a 9800gt.

Will 2x9800 gt outperform the 5770 on a 17'' monitor. Or is a single 9800 gt enough for a 17'' monitor if you play crysis, gta, prototype on high settings.

There was a post I saw that covered all the things that you can compare GPU with, data streams other things whatever. A 9800 GT will perform about to the level of a 240 gt or so. The FPS and shaders etc in SLI are about what that gives. I will either keep myu 9800 gt and save for a 5880 or just get the card depending on how much cash I get at xmas

9800gt is a way better card than GT240 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gt-240,2475.html
