Hello,
I am quite new to building my own PC, and I am seeking advice.
APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE:
Probably going to purchase around Christmas time
BUDGET RANGE: $600-$1000
SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT:
Gaming, movies, internet
PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Mouse
PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: US
PARTS PREFERENCES: Probably Intel with a p55 mobo, GPU would be ATI
OVERCLOCKING: Maybe
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe in future builds, not sure
MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080 (or whatever seems best)
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I'd like a computer that's powerful and effective, but is reasonably priced for its power.

At the moment, everything seems a little too pricey. I was thinking that I could just switch down from the i5 set-up and settle for something cheaper. While I don't want a budget computer, I'm not exactly feeling thrifty at the moment either. A nice intermediate between budget and gamer would be nice.
I am also worried about longevity. Is the PSU sufficient enough to last multiple builds, and is the GPU going to be outdated within a couple of years? I would like this computer to last me around 3 years before I begin to think about upgrading it.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
*Edit: Changed the core from an i7 to an i5
**Edit: Changed mobo, HDD, GPU, PSU, and case
***Edit: Took out speakers, changed GPU, mobo, keyboard
