After a little more research, I may have picked ram that won't work with this motherboard.

Can anyone confirm this please?

Thanks.

No no no on the HDD, it is junk. Get a 7200.12 barracuda or spinpoint f3.
That ram you picked will work but this is cheaper and faster on sale http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] -_-Product
That video card is junk for your resolution.
The rest looks fine.

For any ram you are considering, do your own homework.
Go to the ram vendor's web site, and access their configurator.
Corsair, Kingston, Patriot, OCZ and others have them.
Their compatibility list is more current than the motherboard vendor's QVL lists which rarely get updated.
Enter your mobo or PC, and get a list of compatible ram sticks.

Here are a few links:

Cpu performance is not very sensitive to ram speeds.
If you look at real application and game benchmarks(vs. synthetic tests),
you will see negligible difference in performance between the slowest DDR2 and the fastest DDR3 ram.
Perhaps 1-2%. Not worth it to me.
Don't pay extra for faster ram or better timings unless you are a maximum overclocker.

I do think the ram you selected will work, but contact Corsair support to be certain.

Otherwise, all looks good.

You might want to add an OEM cooler. It will be quieter and cooler than the stock cooler. It will increase your overclocking headroom if you are so inclined. Any cooler with a 120mm fan should ge good.

What video card would you recommend? I don't tend to game very much but if I needed a good card for HD playback then I'd be inclined to game more on this computer rather than a console.

Yes, indeed. Forget the 7200.11 drive. the .11's had a firmware problem that turned the drives into bricks. That's the reason for the strong reaction. the .12's are OK.

The Antec 900 case does not come with a case speaker. It's not very expensive ($3.00 or so), but it is missing.

I picked up a BFG 260GTX maxcore on sale at Future Shop.

Was that a good choice? The VX550 exceeds the power requirements.

Or should I have gone with a directx 11 card to future proof a bit?

GTX260 is a very good card, particularly the 216 version. There is no such thing as "future proofing in PC's" By the time DX11 is needed, the current generation cards will be old hat.

The 260 is a nice card but horribly overpriced right now. The 5770 is just barley beaten by it for nearly $40 less and has newer tech and uses less power.

I picked up the 260gtx for about $10 cheaper than any 5770 I could find.

Would the 5770 be worth the extra few bucks?

Reply to mcg75

Oh well you got a good deal then. Its about $205 on newegg vs the $165 5770.
The 5770 is not worth more.
