Why doesnt the camera memory stick port work in my pc

My HP laptop is 1 1/2 years old runs Vista. All of a sudden the z drive isn't working (memory stick from camera port). The memory stick works in kiosks so I can retrieve my pics but pc drive seems to be dead. What could the problem be - non-techy person here.
