I currently have:
a 4850 512mb
a phenom II 920 @3.4 ghz
4gb ram
an 700w ocz psu.

is it worth the upgrade to a 5850? How much of an improvement should I expect to see? Also what is the difference between a 5850 and a 5870?

A 5850 performs on par with a GTX285, a 5870 performs below a GTX295/4870x2. The performance difference between a 4850 and a 5850 will be quite large, but considering you have a 512MB 4850, what resolution is your monitor? If its only 1280x1024 or so a lot of the 5850s power will be wasted, if its quite a bit higher then it will be a major improvement.

A 4850 to a 5850 would be a large increase in power
4850 is similar to a GTS250 from nvidia
A 4890 is similar but a ways less power to a GTX285
A 5850 is better then a GTX285

It's a good jump in power

ok, I wasn't planning on buying a 5870. even the 5850 is a bit high for me (but doable, especially for christmas). I just wanted to know how it differed from the 5870. iirc, the 4850 is the same gpu as the 4870 but with gddr3 instead of 5 and a lower clock speed.
