That is probably the worst processor to ever come out of the AMD camp. I honestly would not be surprised if it bottlenecks an 8800gt. You need a new processor if you want to game hard.

if the computer was bought from the store and isnt custom built, can the cpu still be upgraded?

as i said int your other thread. if you want a 5850 you probably need to buy a better cpu, i would look on a phenom II x4 940 if your motherboard supports it

though the 940 is an Am3 or Am2+ socket and as you said you have a Am2 socket. i would probably upgrade with something like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

or maybe if you can find something better. but i would probably go for a 5770 instead of the 5850. because im not sure if there really is anything that has an Am2 socket but wont bottleneck a 5850

First, find out the model number of your MB using CPU-Z.

Secondly, go to the MB's official website and check the CPU support list of it.

Thirdly, get a new MB if it does not support both PII-945 and PII-955.

p.s. Some Asus AM2 MB support 945 but not 955.
