PARTS PREFERENCES: I like xfx warranty and how they have treated me over the years and AMD

OVERCLOCKING: No SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 26" lcd tv1280x1024

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I just want something that i can use to game with the newer games out like left 4 dead 2 and mw2.

The rig i have no seems to run them fine, but I am also thinking of the future for games and stuff.

Right now i have a:
Asus M2R32-MVP motherboard
AMD fx-62 cpu
2 gigs of Corsair xms2 ram
8800gts video card from XFX

Now i got 400-450 to upgrade it and i was thinking maybe just more ram and a better video card. So i can at least move to windows 7 etc. What do you guys think?

Well, sooner or later you'll have to replace the board and CPU. Looks like you aren't going to squeeze any more upgrades from that one.

Your RAM could be re-used in a newer AM2+ board though.

Your GPU is probably fine for that resolution.

At 400 bucks that would be a pretty good upgrade.

Would the cpu i have now be able to push that video card, i was thinking of just adding 4 more gigs of ram and that vid card. So i can eventually move up to windows 7.

Your mobo supports Phenom X4, not PII, but still. You can just get a P x4 cpu like the 9550 if you can find it. Maybe ebay.

What I'd do in your situation is to overclock your FX to past 3Ghz (your cpu is at 2.8 stock so it should be easy), get 2 extra GBs ($50ish) or ram or brand new 2x2Gb DDR2 ($100ish) and a $300+ gpu. That'll last you a bit longer.

The HD 5770 is decent. Or if you prefer nvidia, look at 275 & 285 ($360 cheapest at newegg). Look at these MW2 & L4D2 charts to help determine which card to go.

as far a supporting it , supports that cpu by default or would i need to flash the bios etc? cause if its just a add and use then i would just go for the natural cpu my mobo can use and a fat vid card and ram, btw sorry for the nubby questions just wanna make sure im getting the most bang for my buck

I made a quick comparison chart for you. I had to use last years charts to get to your CPU, so there are not many modern CPUs available to compare.

The Phenom x4 would do better in programs coded for it, but that would not be most games.

In most games you aren't going to see a lot of difference between the CPUs, as their single and dual core performance are about equal.

Hmmm forum doesn't handle that well.

You could just look over this:

Proximon, i went ahead and just ordered the Xfx vid card you suggested and 4 gigs of ram from corsair again. I think im gonna wait on the mobo and cpu upgrade till i can get something that will really make a difference. After reading the phenom and fx-62 comparisons it was like, whats the point ya know.
