What's a fake RAID? As far as I know, a lot of motherboards come with integrated SATA RAID nowadays.

Dedicated RAID controllers added on via (for example) PCI/PCI-e are (to my understanding) more expensive because they provide better performance and more features than integrated solutions.
 
It would usually be faster, but the risks of losing your data are also increased. The performance boost depends on what you use your system for; benchmarks usually perform better than real applications that don't continuously access the hard disk.
