will a SATA III hard drive be compatable w/ a regular SATA cable

Yes , you can use the cable because the parts are usually backwards compatable. The thing is though that you want to use all sata 3 parts to get the sata 3 speeds. That means a sata 3 hdd using a sata 3 cable plugged into a sata 3 port to get 6gb/s. If you throw a regular sata cable in the mix you will lose some bandwidth.
