PC freezes during startup or shortly thereafter

My pc freezes frequently during bootup, generally between BIOS starting up and Windows XP loading up. If I can get signed onto XP it will probably work... it occasionally freezes or restarts, but once it's been running for 5 minutes, it's safe (ie. it never freezes once windows has been running for at least 5 minutes). It was working fine before, and nothing new has been installed (hardware or software). Anyone have any ideas?

More about freezes startup shortly thereafter
  1. It may be your hard drive. Have you tried booting into safe mode? If it boots normally into safe mode, then it's probably a driver or startup application that is holding things up.

For the hard drive, open a command prompt and use:

    chkdsk c: /F /R

Replace c: with your drive letter. Warning: chkdsk with the /R option can take quite a while depending on the size of the drive.
