2 or 3 gigs?

I have a 5 year old Compaq Presario tower with 2gig of ddr2 memory. I am running XP service pack 3 and am wondering if I should add another gig of memory. The Amethyst mobo is capable of 4 gig, but I have been told that it will only recognize 3. Also plan on adding a video card. Would I see a performance boost with another gig or am I wasting my money? All replies helpful.

windows xp wont go much faster with 2gb vs 1gb, let alone 3gb vs 2gb. anything above 2gigs with xp is a total waste of $
