I have a new OS X 10.7.2 and a new Verbatim external hard drive attached to it for back up. Every few minutes a screen comes up saying "You have not shut down the disc properly" and I have done nothing. How can I get rid of it doing this?

Sounds like the drive has some form of (aggressive) power save and is shutting-down before OS X tells it to; there might be an OS X driver/configuration utility available from Verbatim's support site (can't provide a link coz you didn't say which Verbatim drive you have)...
