I'm not finding a lot of info on that number you specified. From what I can gather from google, it's a 500SE, but it also looks like Gateway made two different 500SE models, one being ~2000, and the other looks newer. Is there a model number right on the front bezel?

I know it's been a while but I am having the same dilemma. I have found the specs in the Gateway support site and it states that we can upgrade the ram to 2gigs with 512 mb chips. Now my concern is how am I going to make 2gigs with only two chips of 512mb. You see the board only has two memory slots in which I can only put 2 memory chips on. The spec sheet is listed like so;

Support for 64 Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb or 512Mb technologies.
2 DIMM socket support for two double sided PC-2100/PC-1600 DIMMs.

Maximum system memory
256 MB (using 64Mb technology)
512 MB (using 128 Mb technology)
1024 MB (using 256 Mb technology)
2048 MB (using 512 Mb technology)
Single or dual-sided un-buffered DDR-DRAM DIMM configuration

This I found based on my computer's serial number, their is no model number in front and going by the serial number usually gives me some good information but as you can see the specs are either erroneous or maybe I am missreading them. So, I would like to know if anybody else has had this problem before. Thank you in advance for your help.
