No audio device found

note this is the same post as before.
I reloaded the XP operating system due to virus infection. Now I have no sound.
Dell Dimension 5150. I do not have the setup disk for the mother board but have tried to use drivers from the Dell site. no luck.

Do you have a dedicated card or is it intregrated sound. I see a couple options for sound on dells site which one do you have?

Yes it is an on board sound card! I'm thinking it may be defective?

Was it working before you reinstalled the OS?
Did you install the Drivers?
Is it disabled in the BIOS?
Does your Device manager (Control Panel => System => Device Manager) show it under 'Sound, video and game controllers' or list any unknown devices?

this is not my PC I'm just trying to fix it. No the sound did not work when it came here. It had sever virus problems and would barley boot up.
sound is turned on in the bias. In hardware manager under sound it list legacy sound device and when I go into properties there is nothing.

I have installed a pci sound card and now have sound.
Thanks for all the advice.
I'm convinced the on board device must be defective.
