I just have never seen the point of this i7. It's 15% more performance for twice as much cost (at stock). If you're that extreme of an overclocker, then you're just going to go for the Extreme Edition i7-975 with an impressive LC setup so you can really let that beauty stretch its legs. THW did a review where they were able to get the i7-975 up to 4.25 GHz at 1.385v, but they were pushing 92 C under prime95 (and that was with a TruE-120!)

Bottom line, if you're really that much of an enthusiast, you're going to go for the extreme edition anyways, and you're going to use LC (or better) to cool that puppy. With air cooling, you're going to max out your performance for all three around the same levels just based on temperatures. Maybe you can push the i7-950 a LITTLE bit further, but once again, is 15% (or so) really worth twice the price? I just don't see the price/performance justification, and if money isn't an object for you then just go all the way to the i7-975.

@The OP, can you clarify this for us:
i do not no what cooling but i do want liquid

So you are planning to do water cooling? That would change things significantly. For air cooling, look at the CoGage True Spirit, the Prolimatech Megahalems, or the Titan Fenrir for good overclocking performance.

If this is primarily a gaming rig, then your build is rather lopsided. You would do better to invest more money in the GPU. If you're looking at an i7/X58 setup, then you're going to want at least an HD 5850 or a GTX 275 (or better), with the option to crossfire/SLI down the road. Otherwise it's like getting a porsche and then dropping a 4-banger in it. Gaming performance is more predicated upon the GPU than the CPU, although at your budget window the i7-920/X58 combo is probably the way to go.

Wohwohwoh, come off it! Don't bash the Yugo, it's an awesome car.
To each his own, though not everyone is aware of the price-performance ratio IOW whether it's worth the price or not, thus people are rightfully expressing their opinion. It's not a matter of an obsession more of a good advice and that's what this forum is about.

I guess my best analogy was when my son played competitive baseball .... they went to the county championship and split the 1st vtwo games and lost the deciding game ... that fall the team decided on 35 hours of practice and workouts per week. To most it was a worthwhile investment, to my son, he said "later for that" and took up flying.

Only the individual can decide what they wanna give up for what they want....and only they are in position to judge the value of the exchange.

why are you going for the 5770 its a 128 bit aard, if i were you (in the same price range) ild go for the sapphire radeon 4890 2gb oc edition.
Runs plenty faster than the 5770, downside is thats its dx10.1 not dx11 like the 5770

With the shaw you will most likely have to add lenth to the mobo cables.
