I end up with folders like this D:\3b884cb210d05566869b1c68 but all different letters and numbers, often i will find pictures etc that should have been deleted.

Those strange folders are like a temp folder for such things as service pack and .Net Framework install files. The folder is where the files were decompressed to. There is the system temp folder for you and applications to use, but then there are the ones that setup uses for it's own purposes. They are normally have their attributes set to "super-hidden" so they won't be noticed but you are seeing them and that's bugging you.

Thanks so ok to delete them, will back up first??

I don't think you can delete them (or even copy them) and effective permissions are locked-on to the object that established the folders. Adding "everyone" with full control won't work either, so you are probably stuck with them.
