First try it on another computer. A make and model number would be helpful. Is it a USB drive powered through the USB cable? The cable itself may be defective and can be replaced. Is the drive still under warantee, if it is take it to a service center. If it is out of warantee you may try to disassemble the drive and put the hard drive into an external case. You have to match the interface of the drive, if it is SATA or PATA.
