Broken Hard drive - power light will not turn on?!

Hello,
I currently have an external hard drive that I got in August of this year. I've recently travelled from Canada to Italy with the hard drive in my backpack and once I arrived in Italy, whenever I plugged in the hard drive, the power light will not come on and it will not register with my laptop.

Is there ANY WAY of accessing the files from this hard drive?! It has all of my college school work on it.

Have you tried plugging it in to any other computers? If the hard drive is faulty you might have a pretty hard time trying to get your data off it.

First try it on another computer. A make and model number would be helpful. Is it a USB drive powered through the USB cable? The cable itself may be defective and can be replaced. Is the drive still under warantee, if it is take it to a service center. If it is out of warantee you may try to disassemble the drive and put the hard drive into an external case. You have to match the interface of the drive, if it is SATA or PATA.
