Misiing DVD/CD drives in Windows XP Professional

I recently had to re-install my Windows XP Professional and after installation I am missing my DVD/CD drives.

I have tried all the suggestions available on internet and none work!!!. So I am at total loss to know what I can now do

if your optical drive is missing, how did you install Windows XP? have you installed SP3?
Is your optical drive detected by the bios? Is it detected in the device manager?
