The best I could do is really 1600 before shipping. The 950 really puts the cost up and 12g of ram is overkill, 6g is more than enough for anything you will be doing today or next year. You could downgrade to thew 920 and 6g am and get a ATI 5890 and your gaming will fly.....

You're not gettting all of what you need with that i7. If you need 12 GB of RAM, you will be down to a budget of ~$300. Typically, case, HDD, optical and PSU will run $225-275 for quality. That leave almost nothing for the GPU.

Also, the i5 outperforms the i7 in gaming for half the cost.

If you were to drop down to the i5, you could easily get an HD 5850, 5870 or possible even an HD 5970. These are the best 3 cards on the market.

Here's my suggestion for a build:

CPU: i5-750 $200 on Newegg ($150 if you have a Microcenter nearby)
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD4P $170
RAM: 2x G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333 2x2 GB CL 7 $200
GPU: Radeon HD 5870 $440 (can be down to $410 depending on brand)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB $85
Optical: Any major brand, SATA $30
PSU: Corsair 650W or 750W $100 or $110
Case: HAF 922 $90

Total: $1325. Enough for a small SSD for a boot drive...
