I/o device error on my 500Gb external hard disk(Freeagent)

I have a serious problem on my 500GB Sea gate external Hard disk. the problem is when i double click the external hard disk, it show (I/O device error). which means i totally cant open the external hard disk and backup my file and all the documents.......i need help.....the file and documents are too important to me.......please help me..........i need to backup all the documents........please!!!!!!!!

Run the HDD diagnostics from seagate (seatools)
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Try another USB port.

Try it on another computer. If it fails here also, either the drive is faulty or the data cable is bad. You could extract the drive & insert in another external case.
