Swap a 7900GT with 2 x Crossfire?

So I;ve got a fairly old P5W DH Deluxe sitting around - it does crossfire but not SLI (ooooobviously) and a Core 2 E6600. I've read the good articles on here on balance etc, but obv these don't really look at this ANCIENT hardware (!!).

Do you think it's worth making a swap to crossfired 4 series ATI cards from a 7900? If so, which one?

  1. course it's worth.

now what's your budget? and your monitor? and power supply?

for starters i'd say 2 4850s or maybe a single 5770, or a 5850 if you can afford it.
  2. 'ANCIENT' Is an exaggeration. Any Core2 chip is still very respectable in terms of power, and by extension any motherboard that supports them should be fine.

Are you overclocking your CPU at all? If not, what is the clock speed on the 6600? If your at or above 3.0Ghz, Id say go for a 5770, otherwise, 4850 or 4770. Crossfire isn't the best route unless you have a pretty large (read 24" or bigger, at least 1080p resolution) monitor.
  3. Got an ASUS 22" 1680 x 1050 plus a stupidly old Sony at 1024 x 768 - not overclocked at all (no time / guts!) so still at factory 2.4Ghz. PSU is Enermax Liberty 500W so pretty hefty all things considered... Sounds like I could get away with a good 4850? Not been on an ATI in ages so not even really sure of the spec of the things any more --- tho assuming the 4850 is better (way better?!) than my existing 7900...?
  4. Budget = so long as I can play GTA 4 without artifacts / stupidly low framerate and Aion without waiting for things to DRAAAAAW...

  5. Yea, go for a 4850, anything heavier than that wont be noticed due to the low CPU speed.

And yes, the 4850 is roughly twice as fast, maybe more, than your 7900
