Anyone interested in Nvidia's GeForce GTS 450 has a keen eye for value. But many enthusiasts still want the best performance they can afford. In today’s test, six factory-overclocked models challenge a standard-speed card in performance and value.

i have a palit gts 450 sonic (not platinum, clocked at 880MHz). very satisfied with it and can play everything (except crysis) on maximum settings @ 1680x1050. nvidia should lower the prices a bit and this card will be the bang for the buck!

I agree Randomacts; A pimped out 450 leaves me at half mast at best. Maybe there are a few people out there that a 450 is all they want but seriously just get a 460 or 5770/5830.

bah .. i can find 2 X gts450 for the price of a GTX460 ... personnaly ill build a SLI GTS450 rig before a GTX460 or 470 .. sure you can add another GTX later, but you will need to put more money again and again

In an article about value I find it odd that the first passing mention of any prices that I could find was on page 17. For convenience all the prices should be in the tables on the first page.

Also, like others have noted, 5750/5770 should be included in testing. They are in the price range afterall.

I am thinking drop on Friday the 22nd, because that is when the NDA on 68xx performance expires.

There is also supposed to be an Nvidia launch of a GTX 485 soon, wouldn't surprise me if they do it soon to steal some of AMD's thunder because... in reality, the 68xx series performs about the same as the 58xx, but costs much less. It is not until the 69xx series comes out that you ill see some whup ass performance... So it makes sense to kill AMD at the top around the same time if they can't kill AMD in the mainstream with a new product (only a price drop on the 460).

I agree about the noise. I can comment on MSI's cyclone cooler though; but it's on a GTX460. When I'm playing Sacred 2 at 1920x1080 maxed, also with PhysX turned on, it ramps up to about 70%, but the fan never becomes obnoxious, and the card only hits 61c.

The GTS 450 launch article compared the reference GTS 450 to other cards around three weeks ago:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gts-450-gf1...
If you've read this article, you knew about that one. If you read that article and still don't know whether you want the 5770 or 450, please read it again.

Can't measure the noise because they're too quiet, actually, compared to the background noise. It's not like a CPU cooler where you can just plug it into a remote, silent power source. PC's make noise!

Also... preemptive argument. Not only should people never buy one of the overclocked 450s, they should probably wait until November to get a card because there will probably be a further $10-20 reduction in pricing.

My understanding how things are going to/were planned to unfold soon in the fight for Christmas $$$.

Nvidia preps GTX 485 for 6xxx launch
67xx series rebranded to 68xx -> Cost less but performs the same as 58xx

AMD pressures the mainstream On OCT 22nd with 6850/6870
Nvidia drops prices to match price performance (so GTX 460 around $140-150 GTS 450 becomes 100-109)
Nvidia releases GTX 485 and claims top performance spot by a large margin (both performance and price)

Chrismas Shopping Frenzy Ensues

AMD releases 69xx (what were originally 68xx)
Nvidia drops GTX 485 and 460 1GB prices to match price / performance

Christmas Shopping Frenzy is over

AMD releases 2X 69xx, but comes to late for Christmas sales hype and does not hurt Nvidia's now adjusted pricing and thus sales.

Nvidia is OK, they made good margins across all segments by dodging AMD's superior products, and then maintained sales with help from astounding performing (but really expensive) GTX485 hype, and then matching price performance in other segments.

If it unfolds like this, Nvidia planned it out and played it well.

If the GTX485 comes too late, Nvidia might have a problem, because people will be talking about 68xx performance instead of GTX 485 performance, and the 2X 69xx board will also demolish all performance perceptions.

"Normally, we consider a lifetime warranty to be worth around $20 more than a 3-year warranty, and that valuation would put Zotac in the lead."

I don't know what the hoopla is about a "lifetime" guarantee with a video card. I've got about 8 video cards from the first AGP GeForce (Riva 128) to one of the last AGP cards (7800GS) to an HD4870 sitting in a storage container.

Within 3 years, my cards either get sold or moved to the older computers and then eventually put out to pasture for life.

once again GTS450 proving $20-30 more for the GTX460 is worth twice the performance for one card and still beaten by a 9800GTX,even if it's stuck with directX9, 9800's $40-50 cheaper. so nvidia thinks $50 is the extra cost for new directX support, take it away AMD the stage is all yours in this price range.

This will probably get burned with red very quickly, but to me spending extra to buy a factory tuned but still crappy card is like throwing on a huge exhaust system on a Ford Fiesta and thinking you're a racer. Yeah with a 450 overclocked you might get 20% more fps, but does 22 fps vs 20 fps really matter?

Is this comment trying to be tongue-in-cheek? Nvidia, the company who relabeled the same cards multiple times, (as in when Creative relabeled the same sound cards until Aureal exposed their scam)and their multiple relabeling of cards and charging you like they are new cards? Nvidia - bang for your buck (unless you count a bang up job on your energy bill for power draw and required additional home air conditioning) it is not.

Where is the documentation about performance, benchmarks, particuarly the claim that "67xx series rebranded to 68xx, Cost less but performs the same as 58xx"? Or is all this just speculation?
Score

It is not documented, it was said during the AMD press conference that they are being rebranded.

You can find "leaked" documents everywhere though. If you look at the "67xx" series specs found here on tom's, you will see they are very similar to the current 58xx cards (if you were building a cost effective version of them)

I guess we can wait until tomorrow, but the rebranding does make sense since the 57xx cards are not going away anytime soon. (but the 58x cards are in favor for higher margins)

So the new lineup will be 57xx -> 68xx / 58xx -> 69xx which is consumer friendly, and follows price / performance.

Look at the alternate
57xx -> 67xx / 58xx -> 68xx

That is not friendly at all if your plan is to make less technically inclined people buy 6xxx series cards which will have way higher margins.

I've had pretty good luck in the past 2 years with rebates;
Last fall I purchased 2 EVGA 250's for $100 with a $40 rebate on each; I got the rebate debit card in less than a month (my girlfriend got the other).

Just this weekend, I grabbed an Asus GTS450 CU-card for $139 with a $25 MIR for ~$130 after tax. Even if I went with Newegg's price for a GTX460, it'll still be ~$30-40 more.

Yeah, it's not a huge difference - about the cost of going out to lunch a couple times one week. But I'm use'n the 450 in an attempt to build a some-what budget-system for my cousin.
