I notice this morning that HP & Compaq laptops are no longer offered
on the Costco website. I hope this is temporary. Perhaps the 6 month
return policy has been abused often enough that HP/Compaq/Costco found
it no longer profitable to sell laptops this way.

I notice there is a good selection of refurbs. Have you shopped enough to
know if the refurbs are a deal?

It's a pretty generous policy. I suppose it depends on how many more people buy
there just because of that policy. Does the extra business generate more profit
than the bring-backs decrease profit? I bought 2 laptops (Toshiba and HP @
US$3000+) from a Phoenix CostCo store this year and that policy was a major
deciding factor for me. (And unless they break I'm not going to bring 'em
back...)

I bought a HP Refurbished P4 3.06GHz 512MB 80GB CD-RW/DVD 17.0" WXGA+ for
$1379.99, it's a ZD7168cl and a very nice machine for the price. I have no
problem buying refurbished merchandise...at least you know that it's been
gone over and/or fixed thoroughly. The production units surely don't get
checked as carefully ( or as fully).

Wishful thinking.

Refurbs are checked using exactly the same test and
burn-in process as new units. Don't imagine that any
computer vendor can afford to have different testing
processes for refurbished equipment.

Tell me about it. Freaking Dell Inspiron 9100, out of the box, won't
display anything on the display, and has a bad block on the HD. Blech!
