Windows xp will not start due to corrupt file

I get a black screen for two minutes and the the logo pentimento inside appears for about 40 seconds and screen goes blank and error message appears. <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Appears and stays. I tried putting original install xp disc into CD drive but it does not turn on and I hear no whirring noise.i am not a savvy computer person.how can I repair if I can not even get the pc to work much less windows xp is my cd drive dead?
