Which is better an Intel 2.8ghz P4 Hyperthreading socket 478

or

an AMD Athlon 64 2.4ghz socket 939?

Which would be better for gaming?

The AMD would - though both are ancient by todays standards

The Athlon 64 was the Pentium 4 killer back in the day and outperformed it a lot while staying at a lower clock rate. They especially had a good reputation for gaming.

+1 939 socket (AMD).

You'll be able to upgrade to an old 939 dual core too if you can find one cheap (you'll have to look on craigslist or ebay most likely).
