Enabling SMART in BIOS, now what?

I checked and noticed that SMART was disabled in my BIOS, however, how does it work if you're not in the BIOS?
Do you need a 3rd party program to communicate with SMART via DOS/Win7?


As well, what program(s) do you guys recommend installing to monitor your HDDs?
With my build, I have Intel Rapid Storage Technology that was installed, would that be a part of it or not?

I was told that CrystalDiskInfo was good, but not sure if it's the right one or sufficient enough?
