New Gaming/Video Production (home) PC $1500ish

Last response: in Systems

December 12, 2009 7:41:21 PM

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: before the end of the year
BUDGET RANGE: $1500ish After Rebates + new monitor (separate budget)

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: (Gaming, video production, photo editing, general web stuff)

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: (keyboard, mouse, speakers)

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com, or other if newegg is out of stock
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: USA, Idaho, Boise

PARTS PREFERENCES: x58 build with some flexibily in mobo, looking for value and potential to grow into (upgrades and my expertise - OC'n)

OVERCLOCKING: Yes - but not until I learn more
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe

MONITOR RESOLUTION: looking at 24" models which have (1920x1080, 1920x1200) I think. Possible dual monitor setup, depends on cashflow next few months.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: given my varied needs, I will likely have several different masters if you will. Need certain attributes for gaming (good video card, OC potential, etc.), plus additional ones for video and photo (fast drives, more fast ram, more HDD). Hopefully we can make this all work out. I am not huge on quiet. My case choice is not likely quite but is big and cools well.

I have been reading this forum a lot recently. I think I have gleened some wisdom form you all and from sample builds and would like to put forth the following sample build.

Any red flags?

I'd kill the WD Black, not a 500 GB per platter drive like F3 and 7200.12

Prolimatech Megahalems would be nice improvement but $20 more and newegg don't carry (www.frozencpu.com)

In used IC Diamond 7 Karat Thermal Compound
Plextor 320 SA OEM is fine optical if you want BR read

thanks guys. One quick reply. In regards to the non-500gb platter, does that mean the WD 500GB or 1 TB Black model is not as good as the F3?

once again, thanks in advance.

I have made changes to my build based on your feedback.

Couple things to note:

1. Looks like the WD's are not as good as the Spinpoints from the feedback I have received. I will keep an eye on Newegg for when the F3's are back in stock. Thanks to HansVonOhain
and JackNaylorPE.
2. Yoosty - I have read various posts about issues with Asrock. I am leary of them based on this. I initially chose the MSI X58 Pro-E LGA for value vs features. I also cannot get your figures to add up to the $1391.86 value. I am coming up with $1499.80. What am I missing? What is MIR? Thank you very much for the suggestions.

Given the fact that you are looking into video production with this rig...you may want to look at the specific software package you are considering and have a look to what the storage system requirements are...

CS4 for example, recommends a few drives for optimal operation.

What software package are you considering for this "video production"...are we talking casual home videos - or are we talking cinema quality?

Thati s a good point. I am doing home movies. I have a digital video camera that takes pretty decent film. I then make DVD's of our trips and family events, etc. Nothing comercial. It is non-linear though.

My experiences thus far with my Pentium 4 and Raid 0 HDD's is that it can easily overwhelm the system. Dropping frames is handled well some times though not always. Note that my current system is Dell XPS gen 4 from about 2001 so it is quite dated. And I am not usually able to do anything else on the PC while rendering/processing is going on.

I know that I am riding the line between uses but hopefully there is some overlap between gaming and moving making. :-)

I am using a Ulead product as well as Corel Visual Studio.

This is from the Corel Site:

System Requirements:

Minimum requirements
Intel Pentium 4, AMD Athlon XP (equivalent) or higher recommended
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Home Edition/Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Vista (Win 7 ostensibly)
512 MB of RAM (1 GB or higher recommended)
1 GB of available hard disk space for program installation
Windows-compatible sound card (multi-channel sound card for surround sound support recommended)
Windows-compatible DVD-ROM for installation

Non-Proxy HDV Editing
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, AMD Athlon XP 3000+ or higher with Hyper-Threading technology
1 GB of RAM (2GB or higher recommended)
16X PCI Express display adapter

Input/Output Device Support
1394 FireWire cards for use with DV/D8/HDV camcorders
Support for OHCI Compliant IEEE-1394
Analog capture cards for analog camcorders (VFW & WDM support for XP and Broadcast Driver Architecture support for Vista)
Analog and Digital TV capture device (Broadcast Driver Architecture support)
USB capture devices, PC cameras, and DVD/hard drive/AVCHD/Blu-ray camcorders
Windows compatible Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM or CD-R/RW drive
Apple® iPhone®, iPod® with video, Sony® PSP®, Pocket PC, Smartphone, Nokia® Mobile phone, Microsoft Zune

#1. Your RAM will be able to be used in either board...

#2. Regarding the HDD question I posted to you...based on the software package you selected, you should be fine.

- HOWEVER...I would recommend reading this... http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/264258-31-system-edit...
It's long, but it will give you a good idea of why the file structure is important

Understanding how the software package utilized the storage space can make a demanding job easy.

EXAMPLE: I recently built a system

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/270731-31-2500-build-...

and just recently added Adobe Premier Elements 8...

Just last night I was trying to burn some movies to DVD when I got errors which were along the lines of "System is running low on memory" I am still looking into the reason/solution to this...

As of right now, these are HI-8's that I've transfered and I am burning to DVD for family members...I'm not dealing with HD videos yet.

I think it has something to do with how my file system is set up...I've been transfering HI-8's to DVD over the last few weeks, and just last night this memory problem started...so I think it's something to do with my scratch disk.

My point is, look into the program HDD requirements and understand what you need and how to set it up for optimal software operation.

Hello again,
I am narrowing down this build and very much appreciate the great feedback I have been getting. One area I am finding some difficulty in is understanding how much of a given RAM I can put in a MOBO.

If I go with this RAM,

and the Asus P6T Mobo,

can I use 2 of the RAM bundle? basically, 6 X 2GB cards.

Thank you in advance.
