I'm thinking about building a NAS box using free-NAS, what I want to do is to have multiple drives rather than in a raid array, (similar to my Netgear SC101, Which does not work on 64bit OS's) the reason is so that we have a drives worth of storage per user rather that a folder on a raid. (4 users 4 drives)

No, you do not need to use RAID.

That was easy. That said, why do people choose RAID? The answer that may be relevant to you is that if one drive fails, data is not lost. If you do backups of the device, and can stand the loss of a day's work, then RAID is not necessary.

BTW: RAID is never a substitute for backups. Even RAID6 arrays, which can survive the loss of two drives, should be backed up.

Thanks for the reply. I don't need to use RAID just need a central store for all the users (My Wife & Kids) that will be accessible from any pc on the home LAN, or possibly via remote connection if the need arises. never used free NAS before all the posts i have read all refer to RAID and not JBOD.

Thanks Again
