SATA hdd partition problem

I got a Sata MaxtorSTM3250 HDD 250GB with two partitions NTFS (C: with 78.1GB and the rest in D:) C for Winxp and D for applications

So I was begining to hear some scratching noises coming from the drive when running applications on D,apart from these no other errors.

I ran seatools and made a short drive test and gave me bad sectors as a result of the diagnosis.

So I decided to defrag D:(discovered was a mistake later on).

After that, computer went really slow so I made backup of special files and foramted D partition.

Now system keeps asking me If I wish to format the partition again whenever trying to access it.

I tought about a fresh winxp reinstall but I dont have cd anymore.

How can I recover the use of D partition?

  1. It sounds like your drive needs to be replaced.

Try a comprehensive SMART diagnostic. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

HD Sentinel (DOS / Windows / Linux):

    HDDScan for Windows:

See this article for SMART info:
  2. Thanks and must appreciated for the help.

I found many reallocated and pending sectors.

Using the software you recommended it appears that my hdd it's on a critical state. (health 9%)

1924 bad sectors on disk surface and more than 2000 data transfer errors with 100% performance.

So guess it's time for a new hdd.

    Thanks again.
