AMD Athlon 64 X2 versus AMD Phenom Quad II X4 3 0GHz SLI

Can anybody tell me which one is better: AMD Athlon 64 x2 or AMD Phenom Quad II x4 ??? This is for my son for christmas for gaming and do not have a clue but I want him to have a really fast and glitch free computer that will run his game wonderfully....please help.!!!

The AMD Phenom II x4 (X4 955 is your better choice) is the better CPU. It is the newest chip (AM3) where the AMD Athlon 64 x 2 is the older chips.

Are you building a new PC or buying pre-built? Is there a certain budget you are trying to meet?

Which one is the absolute best? I think the first one I listed comes with XP....anyway...do you know which one sounds like the best?

the first one based on the limited info. BUT another BIG factor that should be considered is what graphics card does each system come with? That will greatly determine if your son can run his games wonderfully. Please find out.
