Hello guys,

I'm working on a huge task for school which counts for my exams in june, but I'm stuck on a couple of questions and here's one of them:

So I have a school server with 200 computers and 500 users, but what RAID do you have to use for Virtualizing and which RAID for the rest?
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R715 2U-rackserver.

Thanks in advance.

Is the server limited to 6 internal disks or does it have additional storage?

Why would you need a different RAID for virtualization than other applications?

Sorry for the late reply, but I have finally got some extra information from my teacher.

So I need 2 raids: 1 for performance (virtualisation, big databases, ..) and 1 for the protection of data (raid 5 was good according to my teacher).
Both raids need to be tolerant for failures (backup, ..).

I currently have 4 disks:
1 3x 900GB, SAS 6Gbps, 2.5-in, 10K RPM Hard Drive (Hot Plug),
2 1x 100GB, Solid State Disk SATA, 2.5-in Hard Drive (Hot Plug).

I'm new to this, so sorry for the mistakes. :)

To be honest with you, RAID 10 is faster than RAID 5, but the performance difference isn't huge when using a caching RAID controller. With the same number of hard disks, RAID 5 with write-caching enabled will probably be faster. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin...

For your environment (presuming that the server's RAID controller includes BBU or NVC cache memory) I'd implement a RAID 1 (requires 2 identical hard disks) and a RAID 5 (requires 4 identical hard disks).
