I'm looking to use 4 monitors on a PC but still be able to play a few games without having to reconfigure anything. I was going to use 2 4870s as individual cards. What happens if you try and play a game in this kind of configuration?

Unless you use Matrox technology, you will not be able to run that system at all. The ATi HD 5000 series currently supports up to 3 monitors (6 monitors within the next 2 months).

If it were possible, 2 4870s would probably stutter quite a bit running high end games (Crysis would fry the cards, HL2 would probably run fine).

Really? I mean I can throw in PCI cards and add monitors why not another pcie?

If you run sevaral cards with monitors connected to each, you will be able to game - Just understand that the game will default to run on your main monitor only.

The technology referred to above enables a single game to span multiple monitors.
